The White Hart Folk Club enjoyed a superb night’s entertainment on Saturday with a special Graeme Miles evening of his songs. Organised by White Hart folk club regular Beth Burrows, the evening took the form of shorts burst of talking by performers to remember this wonderful Middlesbrough songwriter who died five years ago.  Performers reminisced about Graeme’s genius for writing such lyrical, moving songs and also about the kind of person he was, shy, retiring, an enigma but when on form brilliant company and a fantastic raconteur.  It was an emotional evening, with many different types of songs from Graeme’s pen – including the funny Iron Moulder’s Wedding, performed by Colin Mather, the tragic Lairdsfield Disaster, sung by John Wilson, and the glorious Northallerton Town, ably rendered by Paul Lucas and Allan Young. A full list of the songs and performers is listed on our website.  Instruments used included guitar, Appalachian dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, harp, harmonica and concertina. The full house included Graeme’s widow Annie and her friends. In total £150 was raised, the money to go towards a fund to pay for a book about Graeme and his works.  This event, it is hoped, will be repeated on an annual basis and will be advertised on the club website. The club owes its thanks to Beth for making it a perfect night’s entertainment.

‘Great night at The White Hart Folk Club last Saturday (29th Sept.) with visiting group Lincumdodie – Phyllis and Billy Martin and their close friends Tam and Agnes, from Dumfries and Galloway.The quartet turned up  while on holiday at Fylingthorpe and entertained us with delightful humour and songs from their native area. Their presentation lifted the evening to an even higher level than normal. At least 21 singers in the audience, with the evening nobly MC-d by Colin Mather.  Looking forward to seeing them again next year.’

Great night at The White Hart last night. Beth was in terrific form as MC and her banter with the two Bills was really hilarious. Great songs all round, some very powerful, some sensitive and some very funny, with a great finish on the moor. All in the warmest of atmospheres. A pleasure to be there.

26/3/17  Nick, ( T’hAntiques Road Show / Caffrey-McGurk-Madge ) provided us with a great solo, unaccompanied evening’s repertoire and entertainment, with his wonderful voice and relaxing manner. A presentation greatly appreciated by the audience. Nick is a master of folk song presentation at its best.

11/2/2017 We were pleased to welcome two great local performers to the White Hart tonight, Paul Lucas and Alan Young, Paul and Alan have been on the folk scene for many years and are accomplished musicians and singers and provided us with an assortment of song, tunes and well presented, moving poetry, penned by Alan Young. The night was a great success and appreciated by the audience. If you get the chance to see these two perform pop along, you won’t be disappointed. (More pictures in the Gallery) Please read email below from Alan Young!

From Alan Young:
We enjoyed ourselves and were humbled by the turn out.
Family had never heard us play and never been to a folk club. They had a fantastic night. Not just because of us two but were amazed at the quality of the singing by everyone. David and Harriet travelled from Essex to be there. A fantastic night so pleased to have done it and so pleased you and everyone enjoyed the evening
It is a brilliant club and we are glad to have had a full house that also helps club finances.

10/12 2016.  We were fortunate to welcome Tom McConville and Tony Wilson to our club as guest artists this night, what a great performance this pair put on (apparently their first night as a combination booking) and we hope to see them again in the future.

The guy’s themselves enjoyed the night, here is what they said;

Dear Ailsa,

We are absolutely thrilled with your e-mail and your kind words.Great to
see you again and many thanks for a lovely night’s fun.Very best wishes

Tom xx

I think that your club, the running, the singing and the warmth of our reception were just magnificent and we could not have wished for a better club or audience with whom to debut our new combination.I feel so buoyed up with the way that we played and were greeted by yourself and the club members.

Thanks again
